Introduction:

Name: Emma

Job Title: Gym Instructor/Personal Trainer

Organisation: VFitness

Years in the Field: 5

I discovered an interest in exercise, particularly running and the gym, in my mid-20s, having never enjoyed it at school. I completed Couch to 5K (C25K) and met a personal trainer who encouraged me to learn and qualify. While working my old job, I qualified with the intention of working part-time in the gym. Eventually, I transitioned to a full-time position, and I’m still here!

Path to Your Current Role:

Inspiration:

The personal trainer I went to helped me find my interest in the science and mechanics behind fitness. I was initially seeking help to lose weight and get stronger, and I ended up discovering a passion for fitness that I never had in my younger years.

Early Experiences:

I started by covering reception shifts at the gym while completing my qualifications. I joined classes, spoke to several PTs, and gained experience. Once qualified, I worked in the gym, picked up a few personal training clients, and began taking classes.

Mentors or Role Models:

My first personal trainer and now-boss, Vic, encouraged me to try something new and gave me the confidence to pursue it. No profound advice—just “don’t be sh**.”

Career Progression:

I qualified as a Level 2 Gym Instructor, then as a Level 3 Personal Trainer, and gained experience by working in various gym environments and attending training courses to lead different classes.

Job Role, Responsibilities, and Achievements:

Day-to-Day Tasks:

My daily duties include running the gym, handling admin tasks, cleaning, conducting personal training sessions, consultations, inductions, and leading classes. I particularly enjoy the personal training aspect, as I get to know clients and celebrate their achievements.

Significant Projects or Achievements:

While there’s nothing specific, I’ve helped clients lose weight and tone up for big events like weddings. I’ve also worked with individuals with anxiety who found confidence through PT sessions and later enjoyed group classes.

Challenges and Rewards:

As mentioned above, helping clients overcome personal barriers and watching their confidence grow is incredibly rewarding.

Why You Love Your Job:

Personal Satisfaction:

I love being part of others’ journeys toward achieving their goals. It’s fulfilling to see them succeed, and I even get emotional when clients reach milestones, like one who finally fit into her wedding dress.

Impact on Others:

I hope I’ve inspired people, whether through weight loss or gaining confidence as new gym members. I aim to share my enthusiasm and knowledge to help others progress.

Reflections:

I’m proud of my decision to switch careers and qualify as a personal trainer after almost 15 years in a different sector. Discovering my love for fitness later in life and sharing that passion with others is something I value deeply.

Future Goals and Advice for Aspiring Professionals:

Aspirations:

I’m currently completing a pre- and post-natal course, which I hope will benefit women in the local community, as there’s a lack of such specialised support in the area.

Tips for Success:

Just go for it! Identify your skills and interests, as enthusiasm makes a huge difference. People respond positively to genuine encouragement.

Skills and Qualifications:

At minimum, a gym instructor qualification and a PT qualification are essential. However, enthusiasm and the ability to make people feel comfortable are just as important.

Continued Professional Development (CPD):

Ongoing learning is vital. Trends and classes change, so keeping up allows us to offer new things and maintain high standards for our clients.
